Overview
The census module in the 401k In A Box online portal allows you to enter in year end salary information for each employee of the plan. The data includes gross compensation, excluded compensation, hours worked, pre-tax deferrals, and roth deferrals. This information is necessary in order to complete the annual administrative duties for your plan and for compliance testing for your plan.
How to Enter in Data
- Log into the website www.401kinabox.com
- Navigate to the "Census" module
- Select the name of the employee
- Enter in all data fields
- Select the "Save" button

How do I find out my gross compensation?
- If you report your earnings by W-2, this will be Box 1 plus Box 12 (coded D). If you report your earnings by Schedule C, this will be Line 31.

What is excluded compensation?
- Excluded Compensation refers to compensation that does not count towards your plan for contribution purposes. Check your plan document to confirm whether your employees’ service. If you are a solo plan, Excluded Compensation will not apply, please enter in 0.

What if I don't know how many hours I worked?
- If you are a solo business owner, you may put 1000 hours as you are considered full-time for your business.

What are Pre-tax Deferrals?
- These are pre-tax employee contributions you made into the plan. On W-2, it is Box 12 (coded D). If this does not apply to you, please enter in 0.

What are Roth Deferrals?
- These are employee contributions made with after-tax income. On W-2, it is box 12 (coded AA)If this does not apply to you, please enter in 0.

I entered in data, why is the census still showing as incomplete?
- Please make sure all data fields are complete. Please make sure hours worked has a value greater than 0.
